Sinai Insurgency and Muslim Brotherhood Presidential Victory Create Fear Of A Land Grab By Egypt

Insurgent attacks from within the Sinai Peninsula have caused Israel to focus more military resources on its southern border with Egypt.

Sinai Insurgency and Muslim Brotherhood Presidential Victory Create Fear Of A Land Grab By Egypt
Israel has activated six reserve battalions and called for its current barrier and surveillance construcion project, along the Egyptian border, to work around the clock to complete it. In addition, the Multinational Force and Observers, based within the Sinai Peninsula, requested more personnel and vehicles. Officially, these efforts are meant to counter the increasing insurgency, smuggling, and illegal immigration problem along the Israeli-Egyptian border, but these countermeasures could also be used as an early warning system and defense initiative against a possible attempt, by Egypt, to retake the demilitarized zone within the Sinai Peninsula.

The recent Muslim Brotherhood presidential victory, along with their previous calls to end Egypt’s peace treaty with Israel, will likely increase tension between Israel and Egypt. Also, Egypt’s previous military exercise near the Sinai Peninsula, Nasser-6, and the Egyptian military’s increased presence within the Sinai Peninsula could signal a possible Egyptian plan to retake the Sinai Peninsula. The continuing controversy which could lead to an Egyptian-Israeli conflict is that even though Israel agreed to Egypt’s troop increase within the Sinai Peninsula, Egypt is unlikely to reduce their increased military presence within the region, after the insurgency threat is reduced.
