Sixteen police officers were injured in the clashes with up to 100 youths, some of whom threw fireworks, large-sized shot and projectiles, police said.Reports suggest the unrest may have been triggered after police arrested a man for dangerous driving.
Amiens Mayor Gilles Demailly said that it had been years since the city had known such violence with so much damage. Amiens has a famous 13th century gothic cathedral the largest of its kind and its old quarter by the river was refurbished some years ago by EU funds. It is a popular tourist venue with shops and walkways and the canal which has allottments growng vegetables out into the countryside, in an iydillic rural setting. Amiens is a university town and is home to many students from abroad. In the suburbs in Northern Amiens however are ugly and souless , the communities are isolated and there are few facilities. There are immigrants, many of them of North African origin.
With the arrival of President Francois Hollande and the departure of Nicholas Sarkozy there had been hopes for a reconciliation with France's youth of North African origin.
Interior Minister Manuel Valls visited Amiens today and President Hollande said "Our priority is security which means that the next budget will include additional resources for the gendarmerie and the police."
North Amiens was identified as among the 15 most troubled areas in France by the government earlier this month.
