"A low-power explosive, manufactured locally was thrown in to a Koranic  school at Sapele at 22:00 (2100 GMT)," on Tuesday, a police spokesman  in Delta State said to AFP.

The explosive device "was thrown from an unidentified car which rolled  by the school. Six children and one adult were injured. They received treatment in a local hospitall. No deaths were recorded and no arrests have been made", he said.

The injured children are aged from 5 to 8 years. They were in class at the school at the time of the explosion, the spokesman specified.

The attack came after a wave of attacks on Christmas day targetting worshippers as the left the churches after Mass and the Nativity service. These attacks resulted in at least 40 deaths across the country.

The attacks were attributed by the authorities to the Islamic sect Boko Haram, raising fears of sectarian violence.

Nigeria, is  a country of 160 million people and is predominantly Muslim in the north and Christian in the south. The risk of retaliation by both sides is very real and there have been many violent incidents over the years.
