The parliamentary group of the Justice and Development party has submitted to parliament a bill to ban all advertising of liquor products.
According to the outline presented by the Islamist elected at the last plenary of the Chamber of Deputies, all propaganda for alcoholic products will be banned regardless of the medium used or the public media focused.
A penal system has been advanced which provides for any violation of this new rule, a prison sentence ranging from 3 to 24 months and a fine of between 10,000 and 25,000 Dh.
Similarly, the proposed law will allow the judiciary to close any institution or commercial media publishing an advertisement for alcoholic beverages, for durations between 20 and 90 days.
The bill will be debated before making its way through the maze of legislative measures for extension or not according to the positioning of political forces in the government majority.
The concerns over such a project, were quick from the alcohol industry professionals in Morocco,it is already proven, they say, by the recent price increase brought about by the Government of Abdelilah Benkirane, the domestic tax consumption of alcoholic products, raising the price of drink prices and worsening the situation of industrial and distribution sector, victims, according to them, of unfair competition of smuggled goods that cover from the latest estimates between 25% and 30% of inputs market.
The other alleged victim of this law in the making, would the media publications, mainly the print media that are likely to seer their advertising revenues wither in case of extension of the ban.
