Mali: 50,000 to 60,000 people gathered for peace in a stadium in Bamako

For the first time since the beginning of the occupation of northern Mali by Islamist groups in late March, a crowd of 50,000 to 60,000 people gathered Sunday at a stadium in Bamako to call for "peace and reconciliation" in their country.

This gathering at the  March 26 stadium was  the largest in the Malian capitalIt was organised by  the High Islamic Council of Mali (HCIM), whose president, Mahmoud Dicko, is influential  in Mali, which is 90 % muslim.Several politicians, including Prime Minister controversial Cheikh Modibo Diarra, attended the meeting at which Mr. Dicko and other religious leaders spoke. He urged them to forgive each other and pray  for peace.


 "Our country needs peace and national healing," said Madani Ousmane Haidara, a prominent imam."It's up to Malians to find a solution and I ask all Malians to forgive each other," Haidara said. There was a heavy security presence at the gathering.

Earlier the government  said in a statement  that  military intervention was inevitable in Northern Mali following the amputation of a man's hand for steeling sheep in Asongo.
