This was revealed Sunday, December 25 by the Attorney General at the Court of Algiers, Mr. Belkacem Zeghmati at a press conference held on the sidelines of the opening ceremony of the judicial year 2011-2012 the Court reported El Watan and APS.
"The Justice has placed Hassan Hattab on probation after expiration of the period of his confinement in protected residence," he said in answering a question about the legal status of Hattab.
He also recalled that the Code of Criminal Procedure had known about the safe house procedure in which the respondent was held. "The judge handling the case has proceeded under the new measures and once the statutory period expired for this procedure, he acted freely and Hassan Hattab decided to place on probation," said Mr. Zeghmati.
The justice minister, Minister of Justice, Mr. Tayeb Belaiz, had said in March that "Hassan Hattab was placed in protected residence subject to judicial control and the judge can be reached at any time to query the person who lives there. "He further stressed that the information provided by Hassan Hattab to the security services had helped "to prevent several more crimes".
Hassan Hattab was the founder of the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC). He joined the Armed Islamic Group (GIA) in 1992 but broke with it in 1998 and founded the GSPC. He was ousted as leader and has been in custody since 2007.
