Speaking at the opening session of the meeting on the Algerian-Mauritanian marketing of fisheries, the Minister stressed that "relations of cooperation between Algeria and Mauritania in the field of fishing did not begin to today, but they have been initiated since the seventies, at the time of the joint Algerian-Mauritanian fishing ALMP." He explained that "this company has had positive results and negative results, but unfortunately could not adapt to survive in an economic environment that has undergone major changes, either in Algeria or Mauritania."  The Minister did not fail to remember that in the 1980s, there were the various Algerian and Mauritanian market stalls for fishery products, reports El Moudjahid.

Relations between Algeria and Mauritania have  recently been boosted by the recent visit of President of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, Mhamed Ould Abdelaziz. In this regard, Mr. Abdallah Khanafou said that "it is clear that this process of cooperation between our two countries which has been planned,  will rely on a strong mutually beneficial economic cooperation." He said that "both countries have great economic potential in the field of fisheries and fishery resources; by combining efforts, they can be an important economic hub that will in the short term, playing a role both regionally and internationally and domestically in both countries. "

He said the fishing activity, with the scarcity of resources, has a particular focus on the international scene where attempts by regulatory means are common way of managing the future of world fisheries resources. The Minister stressed that "it is obvious that the countries of  the south, without full coordination and cooperation, can not compete with the expansionist ambitions of the countries of north where the industrialization of the activity is more important as proof that the main reservoirs of economically important fish stocks are sustainable in the southern hemisphere."

He added that "the Algerian market currently has the absorptive capacity for quality fishery products  and Mauritania has figures of production and export volumes that may interest our market." He recalled that "our country annually imports a quantity of fish products exceeding 25,000 tonnes, worth more than $ 40 million."
