16 Egyptian soldiers killed near border with Israel

16 Egyptian soldiers and border guards at Rafah crossing were killed by armed attackers who then stole 2 armoured vehicles and attempted to enter Israel yesterday. One vehicle containing explosives blew up and the other was destroyed by the Israeli airforce according to reports. The Israeli forces found 8 bodies.

Both the Israeli and the  Egyptian governments fear that the attackers, dressed as Bedouin were islamist Jihadis. The Rafah crossing has been sealed off. 

On 29 June Egypt reported the largest ever weapon haul which was intercepted after the convoy had crossed the border from Libya. The convoy was reported to be carrying 139 grad rockets,ammunition and heavy machine guns. one of the smugglers who was caught said that the weapons were destined for the Sinai.
